Day 68: Anne, Sturdivant, and [ ]
Steve Reich, Chaka Khan -- what do they have to do with Eli? Today's 100-word story in the serial novel Centenary.
68: ANNE, STURDIVANT, and [ ]
- She’s writing about Eli, school music director. “He reveled in their screeches and honks as they found notes, played chords, made music. Pop hits from four summers earlier, show tunes from forty years ago, played in half-time, applauded fervently by parents.”
- What does that have to do with Steve Reich killing Eli?
- “He found sheet music for “Sweet Thing,” Chaka Khan, transposed the vocals into horns and strings parts. When they played it, the parents didn’t applaud. He got called in. The PTA was withdrawing funding unless he was replaced. They were scandalized.”
- But Steve Reich?
- Patience, she’s getting there.
